What is Medicare Advantage?
Here are some key points about Medicare Advantage:
- Coverage Integration: Medicare Advantage plans typically combine the benefits of Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) into a single plan.
- Additional Benefits: In addition to the coverage provided by original Medicare, many Medicare Advantage plans also offer additional benefits such as vision, dental, hearing, and wellness programs.
- Plan Variations: Medicare Advantage plans may come in different forms, including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans, Special Needs Plans (SNPs), and more.
- Provider Options: With certain Medicare Advantage plans, members have access to a preferred network of healthcare providers. Additionally, some plans may provide the flexibility of out-of-network coverage, albeit at a higher cost.
- Cost Considerations: Medicare Advantage plans often include out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some plans also have premiums in addition to the Medicare Part B premium.
- Annual Election Period: There are specific times during the year when individuals can enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans, typically during the Annual Election Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7 each year.
Overall, Medicare Advantage provides an alternative way for Medicare beneficiaries to receive their benefits, often with added coverage and potential cost savings. It's important for individuals to compare plan options carefully to find the one that best suits their healthcare needs and budget.
Medicare Advantage
There are three different types of networks for Medicare Advantage plans.
Medicare HMO plans
These plans usually cost less and have set prices. You will need to go to local healthcare providers who are in a group that works with this plan.
Medicare PPO plans
These plans give you options while also keeping costs in mind. You can pick most doctors or hospitals that take Medicare, but it's cheaper if you use ones in the network.
Medicare PFFS plans
These plans offer healthcare services from any Medicare-eligible doctor or hospital that accepts the plans' terms and conditions of payment. No referrals required.

FAQ
Medicare is a U.S. federal health insurance program mainly for people 65 or older, or for younger people with certain disabilities or specific medical conditions.
You may become eligible for Medicare based on one of the following:
- You are 65 or older
- You are under 65 with a qualifying disability. Medicare eligibility starts after 24 months of receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
- You have a diagnosis at any age of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS,also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).
All Medicare applicants need to be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who have resided in the United States continuously for at least five years.
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted through Medicare as an alternative to Original Medicare. These plans combine all of the benefits of Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical), and may also include prescription drug coverage, if they are Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans.
These plans combine all of the benefits of Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical), and may also include prescription drug coverage, dental or vision coverage all for an affordable and sometimes $0 monthly plan premium.
Medicare Part D plans add prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.
A prescription drug plan may help you save money on existing prescriptions or on medication needs in the future.
