  • Can I enroll in Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans at the same time?
September 12, 2023

You may be wondering if it is possible to enroll in both Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans simultaneously. Medicare Advantage plans are private insurance plans that provide coverage for hospital (Part A) and medical expenses (Part B), often including prescription drug coverage (Part D) and additional benefits. Medigap plans, on the other hand, supplement the coverage offered by Original Medicare, helping to cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Know Your Options: Medicare Advantage and Medigap are mutually exclusive, learn about the differences and choose the option that's right for you.

The answer to whether you can enroll in both types of plans at the same time is no.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), it is against the law for insurance companies to sell a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to someone already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Similarly, you cannot be simultaneously enrolled in both a Medigap policy and a Medicare Advantage plan.

The reason behind this restriction is that both Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap policies provide coverage for Medicare services, and it is not legally allowed to have overlapping coverage through multiple policies. Furthermore, Medigap policies are specifically designed to supplement Original Medicare and cannot supplement Medicare Advantage plans.

It is worth noting that you do have the option to switch from one type of plan to another. Medicare Advantage beneficiaries have an Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7 each year, during which you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another or switch to Original Medicare. Likewise, individuals with Original Medicare can purchase a Medigap policy during their initial enrollment period or during specific limited enrollment periods.

In conclusion, while you cannot enroll in both Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans simultaneously, you do have the opportunity to switch between the two types of plans during specific enrollment periods. Take the time to carefully consider the benefits and limitations of each plan and choose the one that best suits your healthcare needs.
