  • The Medicare Flex Card Explained

If you watch TV or use social media, you've probably heard about Medicare Flex or Cash cards. Many of these advertisements might be confusing or deceptive. Many ads claim that a flex card can give you more than $2,800 to spend on whatever you like.  I get calls from people frequently on how they can get this "free" money.

What Is A Flex Card?

A flex card is simply a debit card offered by certain private Medicare Advantage providers (not Medicare). They're designed to help you pay for medical expenses that aren't covered by your plan; that way, you don't need to pay out of pocket. However, they aren't universally available, they don't all offer the same benefit levels, and only available in specific areas around the country.

The insurance company will set a dollar amount on how much they will fund your flex card for the year. One company might give you $200 while another might give you $500.

You can’t use the Flex card for buying anything you want. It can be used in addition to the basic benefits that are already provided in the plan. Like, deductibles, copays, medical equipment, dental, vision, hearing, prescriptions and OTC Medicines.   You'll need to check with the plan to see what you can purchase or pay for with the card.

  • The Flex card is NOT a cash card and can’t be used to get FREE money or cash back.
  • It’s a pre-paid debit type card such as Visa or Mastercard that can be used toward the cost of extra Dental, Vision, and Hearing services.
  • Medicare flex cards are legitimate. However, they might not be exactly what you see in the ads.

Is a Flex Card Right for Me?

Extra benefits are a good thing, but don’t sacrifice important medical benefits to get a Flex Card allowance. That just doesn’t make sense for most people.

It’s always good to work with a licensed broker who can guide you. They will explain the important details of the coverage in the plan. Details such as your Doctor visit and facility co-pays, prescription drug costs, and other medical costs.

These benefits aren’t available in all areas. If you want to find a Medicare Plan that offers a Flex Card then call us at (833) 265-9655 toll free, or local Pennsylvania (814) 230-0740.
