How To Apply For Medicare

Who Can Apply for Medicare?

You can apply for Medicare if you are turning 65 or meet certain eligibility conditions before that age.

  • Most people qualify for Medicare when they reach age 65.
  • If you are under 65 and have a qualifying disability, you may be eligible earlier.
  • Individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure) also qualify.
  • If you delayed enrolling in Medicare Part A or Part B because you were covered by an employer plan, you can apply now when that coverage ends.

You can apply for Medicare online at SSA.gov, by phone, or through the mail. The Social Security Administration will provide the necessary forms for mail applications.

What to Expect When Applying for Medicare

To apply for Medicare, visit SSA.gov and complete the online application form. If you do not already have a My Social Security Account, you will be prompted to create one—it only takes a few minutes.

Once you are logged in:

  1. Click on “Apply for Medicare Only.”
  2. Review the Terms of Service.
  3. Fill out the requested information.
  4. Submit your application.

You must be within your Medicare enrollment period to complete your application. After submission, Social Security will process your request and notify you when your coverage begins.

Do You Have to Sign Up for Medicare?

You are not required to sign up for Medicare Part B immediately. However, if you delay enrollment and do not have other creditable coverage, you may face late enrollment penalties. It is important to review your situation before deferring Part B to avoid higher costs later.

When Can You Apply for Medicare?

You can apply for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)—a seven-month window surrounding your 65th birthday:

  • Three months before the month you turn 65
  • The month you turn 65
  • Three months after the month you turn 65

To avoid a gap in coverage, apply for Medicare before the month you turn 65. If you apply during or after your birthday month, your coverage may begin later.

If you miss your initial enrollment window, you may have to wait for the General Enrollment Period and could face a late enrollment penalty for Part B.
