Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement Rate Increase Help

Did Your Medicare Supplement Rate Go Up in Pennsylvania?

If your Plan G or Plan N premium suddenly increased by $20, $30 or more per month, you're probably wondering why it happened, whether you have to accept it, and whether another company offers the same standardized benefits for less.

Most rate reviews take about 20–30 minutes with a licensed Pennsylvania agent.

Which Pennsylvania Medigap companies increased rates in 2026?

Between August and October 2026, the Plan G and Plan N quotes we tested increased approximately 18% with Nassau Life, 20% with LifeShield National, 19% with American Benefit Life, and 19.5% with Heartland National Life. Separate CSG rate-change information shows USAA Plan G and Plan N increases of 15% effective June 1, 2026.

These percentages do not mean every Pennsylvania policyholder pays the same premium. Actual premiums depend on age, ZIP code, tobacco status, rating class, household discounts, policy fees, and other eligibility factors. Plan letters have the same standardized basic benefits regardless of insurer — premiums can still differ considerably.

In the six quote comparisons used on this page, these four companies changed between August 5 and October 5. This does not establish that no other Pennsylvania company changed rates at another point during 2026.

Key finding: In every Pennsylvania market tested, at least one lower October 2026 premium was displayed for the same Plan G or Plan N applicant profile. Eligibility for that lower premium may depend on medical underwriting, rating class, household discounts, payment method, and policy fees.

Why did my rate go up — and what now?

Why did my rate go up?

A Medicare Supplement increase is usually applied to a class or block of policyholders rather than imposed because one person personally used the policy. Healthcare costs, the block's overall claims experience, company pricing changes, and attained-age pricing can all affect the premium.

Am I still getting a good rate?

The only way to know is to compare your new premium with the same plan letter for the same age, ZIP code, tobacco status, discount eligibility, and realistic underwriting class. Medigap plans with the same letter provide the same standardized basic benefits regardless of insurer — premiums can still differ considerably.

What can I do about it?

You may be able to apply for the same plan letter through another company, consider Plan N or High-Deductible Plan G, review available discounts, or evaluate a different Medicare coverage strategy. Medical underwriting may apply when changing Medigap policies outside a protected enrollment right.

Pennsylvania Medicare Supplement rate increases for 2026

We keep two kinds of evidence separate: rate changes listed in a carrier rate-change report, and changes we observed by quoting the same applicant profile in August and October 2026.

Rate changes listed in the Pennsylvania CSG report

Filing-level rate changes reported by the carriers

CompanyEffective dateChange
American Benefit Life Insurance CompanyOctober 1, 2026▲ 19.0% — Plans A, B, F, G, N
Heartland National Life Insurance CompanyOctober 1, 2026▲ 19.5% — Plans A, B, C, G, N
USAA Life Insurance CompanyJune 1, 2026▲ Up to 15.0% — see below

USAA's Pennsylvania filing shows Plan A unchanged (0.0%), Plan B up 8.0%, Plan F up 14.0%, and Plan G and Plan N each up 15.0%. Because this increase took effect June 1, 2026, it was already reflected in the August quotes used on this page — so USAA does not appear as an August-to-October change in the city tables below.

These percentages were observed for the tested applicant profile and ZIP codes described in the methodology below. Nassau Life and LifeShield National are presented as quote-comparison findings, not as filing-level data, because no separate filing was supplied for those two companies.

Methodology: Comparisons used a female, age 67, non-tobacco, standard-health applicant in the Pennsylvania ZIP codes listed below, for Plan G and Plan N, quoted with an August 5, 2026 effective date and again with an October 5, 2026 effective date, using CSG Actuarial quote data. Displayed premiums may reflect household or EFT discounts, and policy fees may apply. The lowest displayed premium is not automatically available to every applicant — a preferred or innovative rate class may require health qualification. These are examples for one applicant profile, not offers or guaranteed premiums, and should be reconfirmed before quoting any individual consumer.

View underwriting classes and rating notes for these comparisons

Rates shown reflect a mix of underwriting classes and household-discount assumptions and are not a guarantee of the rate any individual applicant will receive:

  • Preferred / innovative class — typically requires favorable health history; usually the lowest available rate.
  • Standard class — the default rate for applicants who don't qualify for a preferred discount.
  • Household discount — a reduced premium available when a spouse or eligible household member also holds a policy with that company.
  • Attained-age policies — premiums are tied to current age and generally increase as the policyholder gets older, separate from company-wide rate increases.

A licensed agent can confirm which underwriting class you would actually qualify for before you apply.

Can I switch Medicare Supplement companies in Pennsylvania?

You may be able to apply for the same plan letter through another company at other times of the year. Outside a protected guaranteed-issue situation, the new company can generally ask health questions, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Medicare specifically advises against canceling your current Medigap policy until you've decided to keep the replacement.

Never cancel your current Medicare Supplement policy until a replacement has been approved and its effective date is confirmed.

See how the Medigap Open Enrollment Period works, or review how to apply for another Medicare Supplement policy.

Sources: Medicare.gov, Can I change my Medigap policy? → · Pennsylvania Insurance Department, Medigap guide →

Will I have to answer health questions?

Usually, yes — unless you have a guaranteed-issue right (for example, during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or certain qualifying events). A licensed agent can review your specific timing and history before you apply.

Should I switch from Plan G to Plan N?

Plan N can lower the monthly premium while preserving broad protection against major Medicare cost-sharing. In exchange, the policy may require copayments of up to $20 for certain office visits and up to $50 for certain emergency-room visits that don't result in an inpatient admission. Plan N also does not include coverage for Medicare Part B excess charges. Pennsylvania generally prohibits these charges for covered care received within the state, although the issue may still matter when receiving care outside Pennsylvania.

A simple way to think about it

If Plan N saves $50 per month, that's $600 per year in premium savings — equal to thirty maximum $20 office-visit copayments. But the actual result also depends on emergency-room copayments, excess charges incurred outside Pennsylvania, and how often you receive care, so this isn't a guaranteed break-even point.

Should I consider High-Deductible Plan G?

High-Deductible Plan G changes the balance between fixed monthly premiums and potential out-of-pocket costs. It may suit someone who can comfortably absorb the annual deductible and prefers to keep Original Medicare with standardized Plan G protection after that threshold is met.

It's worth reviewing alongside your new rate — not as a default recommendation, but as one more option on the table.

Learn more about High-Deductible Plan G →

Should I consider Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage may offer a lower monthly plan premium, but it changes how Medicare benefits are delivered. Provider networks, prior authorization, copayments, and plan-specific rules may apply. Giving up a Medigap policy can also make it difficult to obtain another supplement later unless a guaranteed right applies. This is usually worth exploring only after a Medigap rate comparison — not as the first move.

A rate increase does not automatically mean you should change companies. It does mean this is a sensible time to compare your current premium with other Pennsylvania options offering the same standardized plan letter.

Frequently asked questions

In 2026, Pennsylvania Medigap rate changes were documented for American Benefit Life, Heartland National Life, Nassau Life, LifeShield National, and USAA. The CSG rate-change report lists filing-level increases for American Benefit Life, Heartland National Life, and USAA, while separate August-to-October 2026 quote comparisons found increases at Nassau Life and LifeShield National as well.
Yes. The CSG rate-change report lists an American Benefit Life Pennsylvania increase of 19.0% on Plans A, B, F, G, and N effective October 1, 2026, and quote comparisons for a 67-year-old female non-tobacco applicant showed a similar, approximately 19% increase between August and October 2026.
Yes. Heartland National Life's Pennsylvania increase is listed at 19.5% on Plans A, B, C, G, and N, effective October 1, 2026, which matched the approximately 19.5% increase observed in August-to-October 2026 quote comparisons for Plan G and Plan N.
Quote comparisons show Nassau Life Plan G and Plan N premiums increased by approximately 18% between August 5 and October 5, 2026, with a new rate table shown effective October 1, 2026. This is based on ZIP-level quote comparisons rather than a separately supplied rate filing.
Quote comparisons show LifeShield National Plan G and Plan N premiums increased by approximately 20% between August 5 and October 5, 2026, with a new rate table shown effective September 1, 2026.
Yes. The CSG rate-change report lists a USAA Pennsylvania increase effective June 1, 2026, with Plan G and Plan N both increasing 15.0% (Plan F 14.0%, Plan B 8.0%, Plan A unchanged). Because this increase took effect before August, it does not appear as an August-to-October change in the quote comparisons.
You may be able to apply for the same plan letter with another company at other times of the year, but outside a protected guaranteed-issue period, medical underwriting may apply and acceptance is not guaranteed. A licensed agent can review your options before you cancel anything.
No. Medicare Supplement applications can generally be submitted at any time of year, unlike Medicare Advantage or Part D enrollment windows, though outside a guaranteed-issue right the new company can typically ask health questions.
Usually, yes, unless you have a guaranteed-issue right such as your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or certain qualifying events. A licensed agent can review your specific timing and history before you apply.

Not automatically. The lowest displayed premium may reflect a particular underwriting class, household or EFT discount, and applicable policy fees, and it is not guaranteed to every applicant.
It can lower the monthly premium while preserving broad protection against major Medicare costs, but Plan N includes copayments of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for some emergency-room visits. Plan N also doesn't cover Medicare Part B excess charges, though Pennsylvania generally prohibits these charges for care received within the state. Whether switching makes sense depends on how often you expect to need care.
