Medicare Supplement Plan N: Coverage, Costs, and Is It Right for You?

Plan N covers nearly everything Plan G does, for a lower monthly premium — in exchange for small, predictable copays. Whether that trade makes sense depends on how often you see the doctor.

This guide breaks down what Plan N covers, what it doesn't, how it compares to Plan G, and includes a free calculator to find your personal break-even point.

What does Medicare Supplement Plan N cover?

Plan N covers everything Original Medicare's Part A and Part B leave behind, except for the annual Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, and small copays for some office and ER visits. That includes 100% of Part A hospital costs, hospice and skilled nursing coinsurance, blood, and foreign travel emergency coverage.

In exchange for those small out-of-pocket exceptions, Plan N typically costs $20–$50 less per month than Plan G for the same carrier — which is why it's the third most popular Medigap plan nationally.

Plan G isn't automatically the smarter choice. For many healthy retirees, Plan N's small copays add up to far less over a year than Plan G's higher premium — the real question is whether that trade fits how often you actually see a doctor.

What Plan N Covers — and What You Pay

Covered 100%

  • Part A hospital deductible and coinsurance
  • An extra 365 days of hospital coverage after Medicare benefits are used up
  • Part A hospice coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency care

What You're Responsible For

  • The annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026)
  • Up to $20 copay for some office visits
  • Up to $50 copay for ER visits without admission
  • Part B excess charges, where a state allows them
  • Prescription drug costs (a separate Part D plan is needed)

If you're in Pennsylvania, the excess charge gap doesn't apply to you. Pennsylvania is one of eight states that prohibits Part B excess charges entirely — so the main coverage difference between Plan N and Plan G shrinks down to the copays and the Part B deductible.

Plan N or Plan G — Which Fits Your Situation?

Plan N may be a good fit if:

  • You visit the doctor infrequently
  • You want a lower monthly premium and can handle small, predictable copays
  • You live in a state that limits or prohibits excess charges
  • You're comfortable asking providers if they accept Medicare assignment

Plan G may be a better fit if:

  • You see doctors or specialists often
  • You want zero surprise bills at the point of care
  • You want the most predictable annual out-of-pocket exposure
  • You'd rather pay slightly more monthly than track copays

Why Comparing Plan N and Plan G Alone Can Be Tricky

The benefits are standardized, but the premiums, discounts, and carrier reputation aren't. Getting an apples-to-apples comparison usually takes more than one website.

“I contacted Dave Scallion about applying for Medicare after being referred to him by a friend. That turned out to be an excellent referral. Questions people ask about Plan N

No. Plan N does not cover the annual Medicare Part B deductible — $283 in 2026. You pay this once per year before Plan N's Part B coinsurance coverage applies. Plan G doesn't cover this deductible either; only Plan F, which is closed to new enrollees, covers it.
Plan N has a copay of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't result in an inpatient admission. There's no copay for urgent care visits.
No, Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges, which is the main coverage difference from Plan G. However, most providers accept Medicare assignment, so excess charges are uncommon. Some states, including Pennsylvania, prohibit excess charges entirely.
Plan N premiums are typically $20 to $50 per month lower than Plan G for the same carrier, though the exact difference depends on your age, location, gender, and the insurance company. The trade-off is that you take on small copays and potential excess charges that Plan G would otherwise cover.
Yes, you can apply to switch at any time. Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue right, the insurance company may require medical underwriting and can decline your application or charge more based on your health.
It depends on the math. Frequent office visits mean more $20 copays adding up over the year, which can narrow or erase Plan N's premium savings. A licensed agent can help you compare your expected visit frequency against the premium difference to see which plan comes out ahead for your situation.
