Turning 65 & Eligibility

When does Medicare start, and what do I need to do?

Timing is everything with Medicare. Enrolling at the wrong time can create gaps in coverage or permanent premium penalties. These guides walk through the enrollment timeline clearly.

Medicare Advantage

How Medicare Advantage plans work

Medicare Advantage plans can offer lower premiums and extra benefits, but they also come with networks, prior authorizations, and rules that vary by plan and ZIP code. These resources explain what to look for.

Medicare Supplement

How Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work

Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare to help cover out-of-pocket costs. Plan G is the most popular option for new enrollees in most states. These guides cover the details.

Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Part D and prescription drug coverage

Part D covers prescriptions through standalone plans or inside Medicare Advantage. Formularies, preferred pharmacies, and costs vary by plan. Missing enrollment windows can cost you permanently.

Medicare questions answered

Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period is a 7-month window that starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month and ends 3 months after. If you are still working and covered by an employer plan with 20 or more employees, different rules may apply. Signing up late without qualifying coverage can result in permanent premium penalties for Part B and Part D.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare through a private plan and often bundles medical and drug coverage together, sometimes with extras like dental and vision. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare to help cover out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. The right choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, budget, travel habits, and how you prefer to manage healthcare costs. There is no universal right answer.
Medicare Advantage and Part D plan availability varies by ZIP code, county, and carrier. You can search Medicare.gov or work with a licensed Medicare agent who can review what is available in your specific area based on your doctors, prescriptions, and pharmacy. Lehigh Partners can help you compare plans available in your ZIP code at no direct cost to you.
If you do not sign up for Medicare Part D when you are first eligible and do not have other creditable drug coverage, you may pay a permanent penalty added to your monthly Part D premium. The penalty is calculated based on how many months you went without Part D or comparable coverage. Use our Part D penalty calculator to estimate the cost.
In most cases, there is no direct cost to you for a Medicare review. If you enroll in a plan through a licensed agent, the insurance company compensates the agent as the agent of record. You pay the same plan premium whether you enroll through an agent or directly with the carrier. Lehigh Partners is happy to explain how this works before any review begins.
